My son has been living in this residence for a year and a half, and I unfortunately have to say that living in Studax was not a good experience for him.
We chose this place with a lot of research, but there is just not enough information on Google to be prepared for what is coming next.
First of all, there are exactly no security measures in the building. We haven’t encountered any security cameras. Students enter the building with their student cards and while the exterior door is open, a lot of intruders welcome themselves in. When this is the case, food packages and parcels get stolen very often. We’ve heard that sometimes homeless people sleep in the bathroom of the common room.
The common room is a room that is usually prepared for students to study during exam periods and is otherwise used as a party room, but the temperature is never right. In winter, it is freezing cold and the 3-4 heaters are not enough to heat the whole room. You have to wear tons of layers to be able to just study there. In summer, contrary to that, it is boiling hot and there is no air conditioning whatsoever. Moreover, requesting a fan is a pointless action.
There are of course problems in the rooms too. The biggest inconvenience was the issue with silverfish. This building probably has thousands of them, and it is a common practice to encounter/kill 2 or 3 of them every day in your room. Studax has no intention to spray the building which they claim is not useful, so you have to attack them locally.
Furthermore, there is no hot water coming from your sink in the bathroom. You have to wash your face and mouth with freezing water on winter days. A very clever way to wake students up indeed! The only hot water you can find is in your shower but you have about 15 minutes to get out of it, otherwise you will run out of hot water and have to shower with cold water.
Room walls are not very soundproof so it is a usual thing to hear your mates sing or get waken up by their alarms.
Kitchen and corridor cleaning is done once a week but the job done by one lady is not sufficient in any way. There are a total of 22 kitchens if I am not mistaken, and she just wants to get over with it. More cleaning staff should be hired for a proper cleanup. No matter what, the kitchen will go back to its dirty state in 2 to 3 days, and there is nothing you can do about it if your corridor mates are dirty, because the residence manager does nothing but send emails about keeping the kitchen clean. There are just no proactive measures.
Technical problems never come to an end in Studax. Now and then, elevators get broken and stay like that for 3 months, or toilet flushes don’t work for hours. Maybe the most disturbing thing of all is that there are substances used on the rooftop every day. As far as I know, usage of cannabis is illegal in Belgium and this problem must be solved immediately to prevent higher authorities from being involved. This is a student residence, not a drug addict residence.
Internet connection was a problem every resident in this building has suffered from. Hope it will get better for the future residents.
The so-called house assistants who are the students who work for Studax barely answer your messages or do anything if you have a problem.
In this residence, most of your problems will go unsolved and regrettably, there is nothing you can do but write a Google review about this. Your complaints will be glossed over.
I would seriously reconsider my decision about letting my son stay in Studax if we had known these before.
